• Guests will make their own wood-fired pizzas, guided by the culinary team from The Three Crosses.

• A selection of wine, beer, and non-alcoholic beverages will be available.

• Beard Papa’s Castro Valley (3295 Castro Valley Blvd) will serve a Rotary-exclusive dessert

King Speech Contest at Noon on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at Redwood Canyon Golf Course, 17007 Redwood Road, Castro Valley This inspiring annual event showcases outstanding local students as they demonstrate their public speaking skills while reflecting on Rotary’s theme and values.

This year’s competition will feature talented high school students from Redwood Christian School and Castro Valley High School, each delivering original speeches that highlight leadership, service, and community impact.

The first-place winner will advance to the Rotary District 5170 Speech Contest, representing the Castro Valley Rotary Club at the district level. In addition to the opportunity to compete regionally, participating students will receive the following cash awards:

• 1st Place — $500.00
• 2nd Place — $250.00
• 3rd Place — $150.00

Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a volunteer-driven nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring that no child sleeps on the floor. Through community service events and partnerships, SHP builds and delivers beds and bedding to children and families in need. CVUSD Leaders to Present New Bond Measure Placed on June 2026 Ballot

Castro Valley, CA — On Tuesday, March 24, Superintendent Nia Rashidchi and Trustee Gary Howard will outline the new bond measure that the Castro Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) has placed on the June 2026 ballot. The proposed measure builds on the success of Measure G, which greatly improved schools throughout the district.

Now, years later, an extensive Facilities Master Plan and comprehensive community review have revealed the need for significant new investments to ensure that CVUSD students continue to have access to the highest-quality educational opportunities.

Every campus in the district will benefit from this new bond measure. Highlights of planned improvements include:

• A new music complex, featuring additional classrooms and a much-needed performance venue
• Upgraded athletic fields for Creekside
• More secure entrances at school campuses
• Improved food preparation areas
• New classrooms to support enrollment and modern learning environments
• And many other critical improvements identified through the facilities review process

Korsgaden began her career with Farmers Insurance in 1989 and earned national distinction as a President’s Council agent, ranking among the top 150 agents nationwide out of 15,000. She continues to hold an active California Insurance License and is recognized as a subject‑matter expert on the state’s evolving regulatory environment. Her background also includes navigating complex claims, wildfire losses, and direct engagement with state regulators. California’s insurance market has been facing significant strain, with rising premiums, shrinking coverage options, and insurers exiting high-risk regions. His service included Honor Guard roles in the funerals of Admiral James Stockdale and President Ronald Reagan, as well as numerous ceremonies for fallen Navy SEALs, Marine medics, and other service members who lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was also frequently assigned to White House ceremonial details, representing the Navy with distinction.

Now a Commercial Real Estate Broker in the San Francisco Bay Area, Mike brings a unique perspective shaped by discipline, honor, and firsthand experience with the rituals that define national remembrance.

During his tenure, Mike participated in some of the nation’s most solemn and historic ceremonies. He served on the Honor Guard for the funerals of Admiral James Stockdale and President Ronald Reagan, and he was frequently assigned to White House details. Mike also took part in services honoring fallen Navy SEALs, Marine Corps medics, and other service members who gave their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. His experiences at Arlington—where precision, reverence, and compassion define every moment—shaped his deep understanding of service and sacrifice.

Nik Dehejia has served as President and CEO of the Oakland Zoo and the Conservation Society of California since 2017. Under his leadership, the Zoo has significantly expanded its mission-driven work in wildlife conservation, animal welfare, and public education. He has overseen major initiatives, including enhancements to animal habitats, expanded veterinary and rescue programs, and strengthened partnerships focused on protecting endangered species both locally and globally.

Prior to his tenure at the Oakland Zoo, Dehejia built a diverse career spanning nonprofit leadership, entrepreneurship, and international development. His work has included leadership roles in organizations dedicated to environmental sustainability, community empowerment, and ethical business practices. Organized by Castro Valley Rotary, the event serves as an important fundraising initiative that benefits local causes and strengthens community partnerships.

Proceeds from the car show directly support Castro Valley Community Partners—a network of nonprofit organizations that provide vital services throughout the area—as well as scholarships for Castro Valley High School students, helping to invest in the next generation of leaders.

The June 9 luncheon will feature the club’s annual participant bag stuffing, where Rotarians and guests assemble welcome packets for car show entrants. 18th Annual Castro Valley Classic Car Show Returns June 20

The Castro Valley Rotary Club proudly announces the return of the 18th Annual Castro Valley Classic Car Show, taking place on Saturday, June 20, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in downtown Castro Valley along Castro Valley Boulevard between Redwood Road and San Miguel Avenue.

This beloved community tradition will showcase over 400 classic, custom, and specialty vehicles, attracting thousands of spectators from across the Bay Area. The event is free to the public, making it an ideal family-friendly outing filled with nostalgia, innovation, and community spirit.

To make attending easy and convenient, guests are encouraged to take BART, with a free shuttle service running from the Castro Valley BART station to the event. Free parking is also available on Norbridge Avenue.

Castro Valley Rotary Speaker, incoming President Craig Semmelmeyer, will present at the Castro Valley Rotary noon lunch meeting on July 7th at the Redwood Canyon Golf Course,17007 Redwood Road, Castro Valley, the plans for the 2026–2027 Rotary year with a bold local campaign, “Be A Part of It!”, The campaign reflects the club’s commitment to growing engagement, deepening community impact, and expanding membership to a goal of 100 active Rotarians by year’s end.

This year, Castro Valley Rotary has set an ambitious fundraising goal of $100,000.00 for the Castro Valley Rotary Community Foundation to support local programs and service initiatives.  The club will continue its strong tradition of community connection and fundraising through signature events, including the Whiskey Tasting Dinner, Barbecue, Axe & Brew, Castro Valley Classic Car Show, Taste of Castro Valley, and the Community Foundation Gala.

International service remains a priority, with participation in the Ethiopia Wheelchair Project in partnership with the Wheelchair Foundation and a January service trip to Cambodia with Robert Chau to deliver backpacks filled with school supplies to orphaned children.

Locally, the club will host cherished community events such as Movie in the Park, the Easter Egg Hunt, children’s holiday programs, and senior lunches. The Club's organizational structure, including board members and committee chairs, will be presented. Dan Willets, incoming treasurer, will distribute the approved budget for the upcoming Rotary Year.

Rose is a distinguished social justice, human rights, and crime victims’ rights attorney whose work has focused on serving children, women, refugees, and survivors of domestic violence, torture, and human trafficking. Through her extensive pro bono practice, she has provided direct legal services to trafficked survivors, including immigration relief, criminal record expungement, and advocacy for victims’ rights.

Inspired by her clients’ strength and resilience, Rose founded Justice At Last, an independent, mobile nonprofit law firm serving Northern California. The organization delivers free, trauma-informed, and culturally sensitive legal representation to survivors of human trafficking, offering services such as T-Visas, restraining orders, criminal record clearance, and access to vital public benefits.

Rose holds a J.D. from Golden Gate University School of Law and an LL.M. in International Legal Studies with a human rights focus. Her studies at American University Washington College of Law and in The Hague shaped her commitment to combating human trafficking, particularly among vulnerable children.

As part of the club’s 2026–2027 “Be A Part Of It!” campaign, this special event offers guests the opportunity to engage with Rotarians, community members, and local leaders in a relaxed and welcoming setting. Attendees will enjoy a curated experience featuring tacos paired with Twining Vine’s locally produced vintages, highlighting the winery's unique craftsmanship.

The winemaker will be on hand to share insights into the vineyard’s process and the story behind its award-winning wines, offering guests a deeper appreciation for one of Castro Valley’s local gems. The Student Backpack Project prepares 125 backpacks with school supplies for local elementary schools students.  Volunteers are requested for Wednesday, July 22, at  6:30 p.m. at the Mormon Church located at 3900 Seven Hills Road, Castro Valley. 

Parking is located at the rear of the building.  Enter  through the rear doors near the Multipurpose Room. 

This acitivity usually takes about 45 minutes and benefits local students.  Please consider inviting family, friends, and colleagues to particpate in this fun event.

Paul Berlin is a native of Oakland, California.  Pursuing a long-held interest in law enforcement, he applied to the Oakland Police Department and in 1977 graduated from the department's 87th police academy. He worked in a variety of assignments as an Officer, Sergeant, and Lieutenant.  He was President of the California Homicide Investigators Association.  He also commanded the Alameda County’s Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement (SAFE) Task Force. In 2001, SAFE was named the California SAFE Team of the Year. He was also member of the Department’s first S.W.A.T. team and later became a S.W.A.T Commander.  As the Police Service Area Commander of West and Downtown Oakland, he oversaw units with in total 130 police members.  He graduated from the FBI's National Academy, Quantico Virginia, in 2000.  In 2001, he was honored as the City of Oakland's Employee of the Year, as well as the Safety Officer of the Year.  Paul is married to Lynne (46 years), having two daughters and four grandchildren.  He is also a beekeeper who is allergic to bees….

Paul will tell us about The Martin C. Kauffman 100 Club of Alameda County, a charitable organization dedicated to supporting local first responders and their families. Their core services include— Immediate Financial Support: Delivering funds (within 48 hours) to spouses of peace officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty to help with burial and immediate expenses. Educational Assistance: Providing college scholarships to the dependent children of fallen officers and firefighters. Family Support: Supplying holiday gifts and financial savings bonds for the children of deceased first responders.

Presentation Summary:

The East Bay Economic Development Alliance (East Bay EDA) is a cross-sector, regional economic development organization that has led multiple initiatives, projects, and other activities to support strategic economic opportunities and priorities across Alameda and Contra Costa counties. From helping the Port of Oakland expand capacity to accommodate larger container ships to helping suppliers and workers navigate the closure of the NUMMI plant to supporting small businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic, East Bay EDA has worked on a variety of issues over its 35-year history. Learn more about some of the work that the organization is currently leading and supporting to better position the East Bay’s $280B+ economy for continued prosperity and success.

Bio:

Stephen is the Executive Director of the East Bay Economic Development Alliance (East Bay EDA), a regional cross-sector economic development

organization that supports strategic economic development across Alameda and Contra Costa counties. East Bay EDA has more than 150 members from business, education, labor, local governments, nonprofit organizations, philanthropy, research institutions, and other entities who work together to make the East Bay one of the most diverse, globally competitive and innovative business environments in the world.

Stephen has more than two decades of experience leading and supporting successful multi-stakeholder public/private partnerships and projects and has an extensive track record with building and connecting regional networks to help businesses and organizations have greater impact.

Stephen currently serves as a Vice Chair on the Board of Directors for the California Association of Local Economic Development (CALED). He is also a Past Chair of the California Workforce Association (CWA) and currently serves on a few local and regional nonprofit boards. He has a BA in Political Science from Boston College and a Master’s in Public Administration from California State University – East Bay.
