DECA UPDATE - Ryan and Kimi brought CV Rotary and update on the Business Club from Castro Valley High School where the program is very strong, including Kimi finishing second in the entire state and earned a trip to the nationals April 24-29 in Florida!  DECA’s Mission Statement is “DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.”  DECA has 200,000 members internationally and 16,000 will be in Florida April 24-29, including ours from CVHS.  Our members donated approx $150 to DECA, plus $200 from President’s Request Discretionary fund was donated to DECA today.

PROGRAM - Today’s program were Jim O’Negri, Superintendent of Castro Valley Unified School District, and Bruce O’Johnson, Superintendent of Redwood Christian Schools sharing their roles as school heads.  Jim shared what it is like like to head a school system with a $70,000,000 budget and 9300 students on 14 campuses while Bruce shared his experiences in a Christian school with a $7,000,000 and 680 students on 3 campuses.
Key responsibilities for Jim: He is the only employee that the Board of Education hires and is an "at will" employee (i.e., can be released at any time by a vote of the board).  His role is to work “on” the district and his staff works “in” the district (big picture vs. the detailed operations).  His responsibilities include (but not limited to):
1)    Supervise/evaluate 3 assistant superintendents, 14 principals and 1 confidential secretary
2)    With the assistant superintendents, he works closely on issues like budget, curriculum and staffing, but they take the lead
3)    Serve as Secretary to the Board, which involves preparing all board materials and packets as well as the keep of the Board Policies/Administrative Regulations – I review and approve everything going to the board
4)    Serve as the liaison to parent (e.g., PTA, boosters)  and community organizations (e.g., Rotary, Chamber, Supervisor Miley, ACOE) often serving on the Executive Board/Board of Directors
5)    Serves at the Public Information Officer and communicate with all stakeholders
Key responsibilities for Bruce: He is the only employee the Redwood Christian School Board hires and is also an “at will” employee (and has been for 36 of his 41 years at RCS).  In addition to supervising the lead administrators and program heads, he is also responsible for raising gift income to balance their budget that is primarily tuition income.  His responsibilities include (but not limited to):
1)      Promote, monitor and actively ensure that RCS will remain faithful to its Founders Vision to provide, without compromise or apology, a thoroughly Christ-centered, Biblically-based high quality education;
2)      Be the Spiritual and Educational Leader of the school system mentoring those who work directly with him to ensure that should anything happen to him that the school would only become stronger;
3)      Wear the clothes of a shepherd-custodian by taking care of the people (kids, parents, faculty, etc.) entrusted to him and clean up after them, if necessary, to include being their protector not their defender unless warranted (to protect is to ensure that the consequence fits the violation; to defend is to categorically state that no offense has been done which is nearly impossible);
4)      Work in partnership with the RCS School Board to ensure that there is complete transparency at all levels of communication and leadership so that there are no hidden agendas or anything that gives the slightest appearance of deception at any level of his relationship with them; and
5)      Accept responsibility for monitoring all financial policies, procedures and budgets to ensure that RCS's reputation is always a positive testimony for our Lord Jesus Christ.
Jim and Bruce are good friends, personally and professionally.  As “Iron Sharpens Iron,” both CVUSD and RCS are stronger because of each other.
