At the August 17th meeting, the Club
  • Heard from Brian Holt, Chief of Planning, Trails, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for the East Bay Regional Park District, who provided a history of the Port Chicago Naval Station, the history of the Port Chicago 50 including the involvement of future Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, the conversion of Port Chicago to a park, and the recent naming of the park as Thurgood Marshall Regional Park Home of the Port Chicago 50.
  • Had had an opportunity to taste olive oil after a presentation by Jennifer Mann, Manager of Amphora Nueva Olive Oil Company in the Castro Valley Marketplace.
  • Learned more about the upcoming District 5170 Wheelchair Project from Carol Bigelow and President Dwight Perry.
  • Heard from Bob Shayler and Bruce Johnson about the plight of two former Rotary International Exchange Students from Afghanistan and how members can assist.
