Relief Bill Tobin, Rotary Relations Manager of ShelterBox
ShelterBox began  as a Rotary project of the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard Cornwall, England and over the past 20 years has continued to grow to provide world-wide disaster relief.  It is operated and funded independently of Rotary International (RI) and The Rotary Foundation (TRF); however, ShelterBox is an Official Project Partner of Rotary International.  Bill Tobin a member of the Rotary Club of El Dorado Hills serves as the Rotary Relations Manager of ShelterBox and shared the story of ShelterBox.
 
 
ShelterBox: 20 Years of Disaster
Bill began by providing a history of ShelterBox and describing the types of shelters and what goes into the ShelterBox to assist people is recovering from a disaster.   Throughout the presentation, Bill shared photos and stories of the people helped by ShelterBox. 
 
While ShelterBox has existed since 2000, its disaster work in Haiti in 2010 is what brought major worldwide attention to the project (image below left).  Besides Haiti, other notable projects include the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami and the Syria Crisis starting in 2012.  Since 2000, ShelterBox has responded to 300+ situations in 100+ countries or territories and has sheltered 1,500,000+ people.
 
ShelteBox continues to work in Syria as well as Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Cameron, Somaliland, Tanzania, The Philippines, and Vanuatu.  One of the more interesting facts that Bill shared was that in 2019, there were 87.9 million displaced people (17.2 M due to natural disasters and 70.7 M due to political conflicts).

Member pictureA Rotary Moment with John Aufdermauer
Today, John Aufdermauer shared his story.  He was born on the Peninsula and grew up and lived the Bay Area his whole life except for the time he live at Lake Tahoe to ski.  John graduated from James Logan High School in Union City.  He started working in the construction business when he was 15 1/2 years old and started his own company in 1980 - 40 years in the business.
 
John has two daughter (38 and 26 years old) and a son (28 years old), who will take over the management of John's business when he retires or semi-retires by the end of the year.  In retirement, John and his family plan to continue their many travels especially to warm water scuba driving locations (you will need to watch the video to learn why).  Watch the video here and go to the 15'00" mark.

President Todd Anglin recognized Gary Howard as the May 2020 Rotarian of the Month citing Gary's behind-the-scenes work in many areas, but especially putting together the outstanding lunch speakers and working with others on public relations to further promote the Club throughout the community.  Gary recently completed PETS (President-Elect Training) in preparation to serve as the 2020-2021 President (14'10").

  • President Todd Anglin review the Restaurant of the Week Program (1'58") - see above article for more details.
  • President Todd introduced Captain Lance Brede from the East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) Police Department who is helping coordinate the May 14th salute for the Eden Hospital staff.  Captain Brede is a Castro Valley native and potential member of the Club.  Read more about Lance here. (9'45").
  • Dwight Perry shared the Thought for the Day:  Fear does not stop death. It stops life. And worrying does not take away tomorrow's troubles; it takes away today's peace. (11'35")
  • Speaker Chair and President-Elect Gary Howard outlined a upcoming programs that will focus on COVID-19.  The Club plans to use these program to inform members, reach out to the community, and recruit new members through an active PR campaign.  (52'40")  Please see President Todd's email for the details.

Aging in the Era of Pandemic 
Debra Bakerjian, Ph.D.  Professor of Nursing, UC Davis.
 
Her research aims to improve the quality of care for aging populations. Her research focuses on patient safety and quality improvement practices in long-term care, particularly nursing homes; and interprofessional education and collaborative practice in primary care.
