MEETING ANNOUCEMENT – C.V. ROTARY RACIAL DISCRIMINATIN FORUM MEETING #16 – TUESDAY NOVEMBER 9 6:00 – 7:15 VIA ZOOM The Castro Valley Rotary Racial Discrimination Forum is an ad hoc group of Castro Valley Rotarians and invited guests that meet monthly to the discuss racial discrimination of Black Men and Women in our community. There are about 30 of us of all ages, genders, and race. The group is growing. The Forum was formed at the time of the George Floyd murder and the Black Lives Matter Movement. We have had 15 meetings so far, meeting #16 is scheduled for Tuesday November 9 from 6:00 to 7:15 via Zoom. The Forum provides a safe space for open, honest discussion of the problem of racial discrimination of Black Men and Women. We watch videos, share personal situations, maintain a library of reference materials, and have speakers. We try to educate ourselves on systemic racism in our country and community, understand implicit bias, and learn real life tools that we can use when we encounter racial discrimination of Black Men and Women in our everyday life. Our Motto: We want to be part of the solution to Racial Discrimination rather than part of the problem: Silence is not an option. We welcome you to attend one of our meetings, even if just to listen and see what the Forum is all about. There is no requirement to prepare or participate. The Zoom invite for the next meeting is CV Rotary Racial Discrimination Forum Meeting No. 16 is https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84183516981?pwd=L1VXc1pXTE8xMGJEL1poQzZmbkczZz09. Club Member Chris Carr will share his experiences with motorcycle touring. Chris Carr Info Chris provided the following information: I am a native to the San Francisco Bay Area, having grown up on the Peninsula. A short-timer by comparison to other Castro Valley residents, we are now in year 19 of living in Castro Valley, and I consider myself “home” when I am here. I have been riding motorcycles since I was in my adolescence—mostly in secret because my mother hated them and never sanctioned the activity. I bought my first bike when I graduated from UC Berkeley in 1999, but I had been working for a motorcycle touring company for a couple of years prior to that, so I didn’t need to own one! Since then, I have owned several big bikes, sometimes as many as three at a time, but my lovely wife, Robin, insists that I’m only allowed two at a time. I have been touring for many years and have seen most of the western eleven states from behind the handlebars of a motorcycle. My last long trip was to Death Valley. |

"Locating Decline and Growth of Civic Associations in Communities: The Case of the YMCA, 1950-2000."
Mar 29, 2022 12:00 PM
David Joseph-Goteiner, PhD student in sociology at UC Berkeley, will describe his study of the YMCA and its nationwide decline in membership and relate those findings to Rotary. He studies the dynamics of contemporary communities from the micro (apartment building, neighborhood) to the meso (community organizations across the US) to the macro (global social movements) scales. He is preparing his dissertation prospectus at the intersection of organizations, culture, and technology. His master's paper is titled "Locating Decline and Growth of Civic Associations in Communities: The Case of the YMCA, 1950-2000." It attempts to better isolate the causes of decline and growth in civic associations by focusing on one national organization with many local chapters, the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA). The discovery of great internal heterogeneity across YMCA chapters implies that the national fates of many organizations are not the result of a common, global force (e.g., television or state intervention), but are the net outcome of many discrete factors. Before coming to UC Berkeley, David completed a master's in sociology at École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (in 2018) and received his bachelor's from Yale University (in 2014). |
