PROGRAM - Today’s program was presented by our very own KJ Page. Her topic was Medical Marijuana. She began by giving us some statistics: Roughly 9%, or 1 out of 11, who use recreational marijuana will develop an addiction syndrome; the figure increases to 17% or 1 our of 6, who begin to use it in their early teens. This compares with lifetime prevalence rates of 32% for nicotine, 23% for heroin, 17% for cocaine, and 15% for alcohol.

RECOGNITIONS
$40 Dan Willits for his birthday (he's one of our younger members!)

PAYING IT FORWARD
$20 Ben Gurule was impressed by the people who spoke at CVUSD Superintendent Jim Negri’s Retirement Celebration June 8
$300 Jim Negri counted how many attended the celebration on June 8th, he multiplied 15 times 20 and is giving that amount to The Rotary Foundation.
$10 KJ Page thanked Bob Shayler for helping her set up for her presentation, and $10 to thank Bernie Kempen for finding a date for her to speak

KJ Page brought travel supplies and gave them to Margie Ramos. KJ reminded all of us how easy it is to do this, and it keeps our cupboards clean of these unused supplies!

KJ presented information for "Demystifying Cannabis".

Interesting facts:

  • The original classification of Cannabis indica was made by French biologist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck in 1785.
  • Cannabis was illustrated in Köhler's book of medicinal plants in 1897.
  • February 2015, a PubMed search for scientific journal articles published in the last 20 years containing the word "cannabis" revealed 8,637 results. Add the word "cannabinoid," and the results increase to 20,991 articles. That's an average of more than two scientific publications per day over the last 20 years! These numbers not only illustrate the present scientific interest and financial investment in understanding more about cannabis and its components, but they also emphasize the need for high quality reviews and summaries.
  • From Sacred plant to evil weed in only 6,000 years!!!

KJ shared that in 1902 Thomas Edison said, "There were never so many able, active minds at work on the problems of disease as now, and all their discoveries are tending toward the simple truth that you can't improve on nature."

The organization Americans for Safe Access has produced an excellent and informative guide to the various state laws regarding medical cannabis, "Medical Marijuana Access In The US: A Patient-Focused Analysis of the Patchwork of State Laws," available as a free download from their website www.safeaccessnow.org.
See more at: www.drugwarfacts.org/cms/Medicinal_Cannabis#Diabetes

A number of medical organizations have endorsed reclassification of marijuana to allow for further study. These include, but are not limited to:
The American Medical Association
The American College of Physicians – America's second largest physicians group
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society – America's second largest cancer charity

LOOKING FOR THE MOLAR WITH THE GOLD GLITTER FILLING DONE “JUST FOR US” BY DR. HEIDI, and with $81 and 12 teeth in the bag, Bonnie Best’s ticket was drawn and she reached in and . . . won $5 for pulling a cavity-free tooth!
