Speaker:

Carol Wikle introduced Mr. David Behring, home builder, formerly working for Seattle Seahawks, and currently President of "The Wheelchair Foundation"

David is Past Prez of the Danville? Sycamore Valley Rotary Club.

Talk was on the wonderful good the Wheelchair Foundation "WF" has accomplished.

3 examples of how chair recipients have made a impression on David---------------- in Guatemala, a little girl who had her family killed in a traffic accident was placed in a wheelchair and within minutes was all over the place with her new gift of mobility, a smile from ear to ear.

in Mexico City an 84 yr old woman had prayed for an angel to save her, then David placed her in a wheelchair, the woman was sure David was her Angel.

In Vietnam a 17 year old girl who was crippled since 3 yrs old had dreams of becoming a Doctor. After she was given a wheelchair her world changed and has continued her studies to make that dream a reality. By the way, she is a straight A student.

In 3rd world countries being crippled is a BAD stigma. Most are shut away in a room for decades. Wheelchairs bring people out of the corners and give them a chance to be productive citizens.

WF was started in 2000 by Ken Behring after Ken saw 1st hand how the simple gift a wheelchair could change a persons life so dramatically.

1,400 have gone son far to Iraq, which is so very difficult to deliver to. NGO's pay a big part in most countries as does Rotary.

WF provides chairs for US folks too, who have fallen through the health care gaps.

5 causes for the need of wheelchairs was given:

War, conflicts, and terrorism, including land mines Decease,& malnutrition Natural Disasters Car Accidents, 30 million a year worldwide old age

David showed a video of how Rotary has partnered with the WF. With Polio a major effort to eradicate in Rotary, giving a chair to a polio victim fit well. Cripples due to Polio is very, very low now thanks to Rotary.

Those interested in participating in a Wheelchair distribution are invited to join in a distribution in Monterey Mexico Jan 16-20.

Contact Howard Tours for info; rotary@howardtours.net

140-150 Wheelchairs have come thru Rotary to date.
