GUESTS
Our guests today were Kyle Mitchell, interning with Carol Wikle at Merrill Lynch, and Dr. Andy and Marty Kennelly, celebrating 61 years of marriage!
DR. AND MRS. ANDY KENNELLY HONORED
President Short honored the Kennelly’s today for their 61 years of marriage. He asked them several questions about their life together and provided some personal history for us, including Dr. Kennelly flying bombers during WW2 and was a professor and administrator at California State University, Hayward, and Mrs. Kennelly serving our community as a writer. We also were reminded by President Short that the collection plate that is used every week was made personally by Dr. Kennelly over twenty-five years ago. President Short thanked them for their example to all of us.
REMINDER: PAUL HARRIS AND DOUBLE SUSTAINER REMINDER
President Short had Dwight remind all of us (again!) that it is not too late to contribute to the Paul Harris Fund nor to become a Double Sustainer . . . please contact Dwight Perry at Dwight@pinthis.com for details on both! PROGRAM
Cliff
Sherwood introduced today’s speaker, Alameda County Sheriff Greg Ahern. The
Alameda County Sheriff's Office is a full service law enforcement agency
accredited through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement
Agencies (CALEA), the American Correctional Association (ACA), National
Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) and the California Medical
Association (CMA). Alameda County Sheriff’s Regional Training Center is
dedicated to one fundamental purpose: to provide quality training. The
Sheriff’s Department seeks to challenge all students to their fullest
potential, establishing the highest standards possible. The programs are
designed not only to impart knowledge but to create confidence in students
that allows them to control their professional environment. To meet the
challenge, the Sheriff’s Department has handpicked a cadre of instructors
representing federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. Never
before has quality training been so vital to an officer's job performance.
As Sheriff of Alameda County, Sheriff Ahern is pleased and proud of his
staff, the programs, and the training provided by the Regional Training
center.
Although
we have 1000 badged officers and 650 support staff, we are still
understaffed compared to other parts of our country. Santa Rita Jail is the
sixth largest jail in the country housing 4000 inmates. There will be a
great training opportunity coming up called Urban Shield where there will be
twenty-four teams from throughout our country coming to our area for a
fifty-hour non-stop training exercise. This will go far in protecting us
from those who want to harm us. Teams are coming from throughout the State
and as far away as Boston. For a GREAT visual on Urban Shield, simply go to
http://www.urbanshield.org/ and “turn up the volume on your computer.”
Thank you, Sheriff Ahern, and all of those serving with you for the safety
we have because of your efforts!
THE HUNT FOR THE CORRECT MARBLE
Sheriff Ahern reached into the marble sack and pulled out his ticket and with $120 at stake and 11 marbles in the sack . . . . reached into it and . . . won . . . $5.00 . . . And gave it to the Kennellys! Congratulations!
