RACHEL’S
CHALLENGE
Leslie Rothwell shared information about a November 15 program at Castro Valley High School named after the first victim of the Columbine High School killings on April 20, 1999. Her acts of kindness and compassion coupled with the contents of her six diaries have become the foundation for one of the most life-changing school programs in America - Rachel's Challenge. The focus is breaking up cliques and assemblies will be held all week leading up to a 7 PM program for parents at the Castro Valley Performing Arts Center on November 15. The meeting is open to the public.
PROGRAM
Sal Tedesco introduced SGT. Scott Dudek of the
Alameda County Sheriff's Department. SGT Dudek was the lead person with
Castro Valley’s Jane Doe case, where a young girl was found dead behind
Carrow’s Restaurant on May 1, 2003. The 16-year-old was only identified
last year as Yesenia Nungaray from Yahualica, Mexico. SGT Dudek’s
career began in Connecticutt where he was the youngest deputy in the
state. He moved to California and has been with the Alameda County
Sheriff’s Department for the past twenty-five years, and is known as the
“Crimes Against Persons” Sergeant leading a team of seven officers. SGT
Dudek provided insights in how law enforcement works through a case such
as the Jane Doe case, and all of the challenges it provides, including
political, legal and cultural challenges. The case will be featured
this Saturday on CBS’ Most Wanted this Saturday night and again on 48
Hours on
December
15. When first discovered, the body was believed to be that of a
five-year-old, but her clothes (pajama pants with designed shirt) stated
otherwise as that was the dress of teenagers at that time. SGT Dudek
and his team pursued this case relentlessly, including three trips to
Mexico, the last one to lay Yesenia to rest. Along the way in pursuing
her killer,
the team found a village in Mexico where 350 girls, aged 14-18, had been murdered or disappeared. His story of
trying to get DNA from mothers to possibly match bodies found in the USA was heart-wrenching. He is hopeful that the case can be closed soon as an arrest warrant has been issued for a suspect, the man with whom Yesenia was living while living in neighboring Hayward, who worked at Carrow’s when the body was discovered. SGT Dudek
was an amazing program. For an update on the arrest warrant and other information about this case, please go to http://www.insidebayarea.com/search/ci_7393593?IADID=Search-www.insidebayarea.com-www.insidebayarea.com
