The Late Great Roman (23-79 A.D) officer and encyclopedist, author of the Natural history., Pliny the Elder Opined’ “There is always something new out of Africa”or in Latin….Ex Africa semper aliquid novi.   President Bernie spoke on the life and works for Phiny the Elder stating that the “out of Africa” statement actually goes back to Aristotle.  Phiny the Elder wrote 37 volumes on natural history and other topics.  He died when Mount Vesuvius erupted when he was but 56 years old.

Depressing Factoid: Brazilians are claiming that the Amazon is, in fact, the longest river in the world and NOT the Nile!  (Yes, President Bernie was in de-Nile about the announcement!)

PROGRAM

President Bernie introduced Suzan Bateson, Executive Director of the Alameda County Community Food Bank.  Suzan shared that two images drive her daily to serve in her position: the first is of a child going hungry and the second is of a senior citizen standing in a food line.  Starting with that illustration, Suzan provided story after story and fact after fact about the Alameda County Community Food Bank.  She stressed that they desire to provide fresh produce for those they serve (40,000 each week, including 14,000 children and 7,000 seniors!) and other healthy food.  They distribute ovver 250,000 pounds of food each week, and work hard to encourage folks who are eligible to participate in the Food Stamp Program and feed their families fresh food.  They have received a lot of interesting donations through the years, including Chocolate Chip Cookies for Dummies (true!) and Reese’s Pieces cereal . . .   The ACCFB is always looking for volunteers . . . and donations are always welcome!  Do visit http://www.accfb.org/ and catch what you missed, and if you wish to get involved, please call Suzan directly at (510) 635-3663, ext. 301 . . .

SEARCH FOR THE CORRECT MARBLE
