PROGRAM
Dwight Perry introduced our
speaker for today, Eric M. Latham, Founder and President of Walk About
America,. The mission of Walk About America is “to invigorate the generous
nature of Americans by enhancing community awareness and involvement.” And
invigorate us Eric did with one of the most moving and inspiring program we
have ever been blessed with at CV Rotary!
The passion of ths 25-year-old to reach others was tremendous, and as he
shared stories from his 206 day, 3591 mile “walk” in which he raised over
$20,000 leaving Nags Head, North Carolina (and the Atlantic Ocean) and
walking across the Golden Gate Bridge to Baker Beach (and the Pacific
Ocean).
During the trip he turned down 271 rides (he truly walked the entire way!),
was stopped by the police thirty-four times (and had his ID checked fifteen
times!) and lost 42 pounds! Declaring himself a “professional pedestrian,”
he carried sixty-five pounds on his back and shared a power point
presentation with too many highlights to list, including a great one of his
enjoying GSDs (Gas Station Delicacies), and he told great stories about the
over one hundred people who walked with him at some time along the way, some
for miles and some for a few hundred feet.
His book “Take Steps with a Purpose - A Walk About American for Cancer
Research” was available at the meeting with one half of the discounted $20
cost going to the Oakland Children’s Hosptial. Watch out in the future for
this young man . . . and for his next book . . . learn more about Eric and
