PROGRAM
Walt Schneider introduced Rick Rosefield who addressed the topic of “Dealing with Disability.” What a GREAT program of challenge accepted and victory achieved . . . but not without a cost! Rick has been married for 51 years to the miraculous and tremendous Jan . . . they have four children . . . he referred to Jan as 3/4 of their relationship . . . and they have shared breakfast in bed every since they got married! Rick is a quadriplegic who cannot walk, can only lift one pound with his left hand and only five pounds with his right hand, but he lives a very busy life thanks to the devotion of his wife and love of others in his life. There are only two others in the United States with the same symptoms of his undiagnosed disease. He stressed that the key is not to become discouraged, keep looking for a doctor to work with (he has had over a dozen before finding his current doctor) and assume responsibility to help find out what the problem is by researching on the Internet, which takes up much of each of his days. Rick shared his “normal” day, that includes Jan taking up to two hours to get him dressed each day, trips to doctor and then “adventures” when they explore the community that they find themselves in! He shared that not only does the wheelchair make a tremendous difference, but it also is a “babe magnet.” His chair not only is electric and can turn on a dime, it also can be put in recliner mode for naps and can be raised straight up to enable him to travel at eye level with others on the street! Rick also shared other “helps” that make his life easier, including a “Reacher” that enables him to reach things unreachable from his chair. The yearly costs are tremendous with his medical expenses in 2007 totaling almost $300,000. One medicine cost $25,000 per month alone. Insurance companies routinely reject submissions, so have your documentation in order and plan to persevere throughout the process. Rick led a very productive life in film making all over the world before being struck down by this unknown disease, but he (with the help of Jan) has not let this discourage him from living a productive life. He was truly inspirational and is more than willing to share his story with other groups.
THE
HUNT FOR THE CORRECT MARBLE
Visitor (and CV Rotarian Al West’s Bride) Lisa West’s ticket was pulled and with $22 and 19 marbles in the sack, reached in and won . . . . $5.00 . . . Congratulations!
