OPENING

President Dick Short welcomed everyone and Al West volunteered to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance followed by Bruce Johnson giving thanks for our speaker today (representing first responders in our county), our Great Country, its leaders and our defenders, both overseas, including the 3200 Marines leaving for Afghanistan soon, and the first responders here at home, and the freedoms we enjoy.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Bruce Johnson shared the Thought for the Day from President Theodore Roosevelt in 1907:  'In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American . . .  There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag . . .   We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language. . .  and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.'

KEEPING IN TOUCH

Last Thursday, January 10, CV Rotarian Owen Smith had lunch with Ernie Crook and Lee Benson.  Mr. Smith brings us this update: “Ernie is 94 as I'm sure you know, and Lee will be 92 today, his birthday.  Couple great Rotarians even though Lee is a retired one.  Lee was in Hayward Club and was on committee that formed the   CV Club.  Ernie was one of the members that Lee brought into Rotary  and is a Charter Member of our Club.  Lee later transferred from Hayward to CV.  Ernie was the President just before me.  Some newer members might like to know some of the history.”  Thanks, Mr. Smith, for this update . . . it is important that we not forget our “roots.”  (After announcements, Past President KJ Page opened a letter at the meeting and shared that Elwood Johnson had written her that his dear Bride has passed away . . . Mr. Johnson will be 100 years old in June 2008!  Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Johnson . . . and congratulations, too!

PROGRAM

Master Fly Fisherman Walt Schneider introduced Commander Brett Keteles, Commander Law Enforcement Service Division for Alameda County Sheriff's Department.  Commander Keteles provided information on the outcomes of the recent Urban Shield training exercise that involved seventy-five agencies from around the world totaling over 1400 people – at a cost to Alameda County of $0!  He shared the history of Urban Shield dating back to its predecessor, the High Sierra Swat Challenge.  The Urban Shield exercises were paid for by Homeland Security Funds.  The After Action Report was very interesting as Commander Keteles walked us through the various exercises that each team needed to complete throughout the Bay Area, with no sleep.  Teams were moved from one challenge to another as they accomplished many goals, including a fatigue study on how sleep deprivation and exhaustion affects performance.  Many lessons were learned through experiencing this training.  Teams from throughout the country experienced many things for the first time as they prepare to protect us.  This was a tremendously successful event and one that is already being evaluated for next year!

Thank you, Commander Keteles, for not only your service to us, but also for your unselfish service in helping to prepare others in other areas to better respond to various terrorist threats.

THE HUNT FOR THE CORRECT MARBLE

Bruce Johnson’s ticket was pulled and with $15 and 20 marbles in the sack, reached in and won . . . .  $5.00 . . .   Congratulations!
