UPDATE ON ONE OF OUR OWN - Jan Hall, Ben Gurule’s Best Friend

As has been shared in an earlier e-mail, Janice has recently suffered a heart attack complicated by pneumonia and, since January 28, has been at the Critical Cardiac Unit at Kaiser in Hayward.  The latest update: it now looks like Jan's condition is on a day to day basis. In addition to pneumonia her heart valve is weak and not working correctly.  The specialist says that they have to get the pneumonia under control, before they can do a bypass.  (Note from COG Scribe: Let’s be sure to keep Jan - and Ben - in our thoughts and prayers.)

PROGRAM

Mr. Sal Tedesco introduced Dr. Jay Tontz, Economic Review & Forecasts, his yearly update.  Once again, Dr. Tontz mesmerized us and as CV Rotarian Kim Murdock said “took the boring subject of economics and actually made it interesting!”  Dr. Tontz is Dean Emeritus of the College of Business and Economics at California State University, East Bay (formerly CSU Hayward).  He reviewed the forecast he made this time last year for 2007

and the results – and nailed every category but one!  He covered the challenging times we faced in 2007, and the liabilities and off setting assets.  He stressed that the United States has an outstanding economic track record, and the remarking resilience of the U.S. economy for over 100 years.  Dr. Tontz covered the recent federal actions to increase stability, and well as multiple other topics, including uncertainties (e.g., fighting terrorists in 28 countries!).  After stating the assumptions he was making, he then gave us his forecast for 2008!  Be sure to come back next year when he will once again review his 2008 projections and make his 2009 projections!    We so appreciate Dr. Tontz.

THE HUNT FOR THE CORRECT MARBLE

Bernie Kempen’s ticket was pulled (two weeks in a row!) and with $45 and 17 marbles in the sack, reached in and won . . . .  $5.00 . . .   Congratulations!
