OPENING

President Dick Short welcomed everyone with “have you ever told anyone you like their smile?” and then asked Beth Moore to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Bruce Johnson asked the blessing on our lunch, and prayed for our armed services personnel at home or overseas, first responders, our Great Country, its leaders and our defenders.

RECOGNITIONS

$100    Bob Shayler for his one-month old Italian-Portugese-English-Irish-German-Dutch grandson making Bob a DAJO!

Although no guests were present (except our speaker and assistant), Sue Whalen returned for a visit and DAJO (see Recognitions above) Bob Shayler.

OUR NEW ROTARY EXCHANGE STUDENT, NICHAPHAT RATTANAPORN

DAJO Bob Shayler shared that Nichaphat Rattanaporn is our Rotary Exchange Student for 2008-09.  A native of Thailand, she will be attending Castro Valley High School.  Both of her parents are Rotarians!

Be ready to welcome Nichaphat!

PROGRAM

Bob Crossett introduced Tom Blalock, a member of the BART Board of Directors.  Tom was assisted by Kari, from BART’s Government and Communications Department.  Prior to retiring, Mr. Blalock worked for the City of Fremont Department of Public Works.  He shared that BART was formed fifty years ago with the first train running thirty-five years ago.  He reviewed the history and growth of BART and how the Bay Area Rail System works together for everyone’s benefit.
