Castro Valley Rotary Meeting Minutes

 February 20, 2007

12:15 PM Sharp!

President Bernie Kempen presiding:

Good Afternoon and welcome to today’s meeting of the Castro Valley Rotary Club, Castro Valley Rotarians; Visiting Rotarians and last but by no means least, Guests.

Please Rise for our CONTINUALLY EVOLVING invocation.

Invocation: We gather today for purposes of fun, fellowship; and to seek opportunities to give service above self. We remind ourselves that as we meet here to hear speakers on a variety of topics, we believe that if we as Rotarians remain non-political and secular in our approach, we are able to best serve our club, our community and people in need everywhere, since networking and helping those in need are the only items on our agenda. We strive to Navigate and Lead the way to peace and harmony in the world

We network as business professionals in the tradition of our founder Paul Harris, We do our best to make the correct ethical choices, when confronted with an ethical dilemma. Accordingly we aspire to the four way test in what we think say and do.

Four Way Test:

As we turn to the flag of the United States today we are reminded that the flag is indeed an embodiment of the Rotary 4-way test. We call on Leslie Rothwell to recite our 4 way test.

Today we call on Jerry to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America.

Blessing:  According to our club traditions, a blessing is asked or offered before each meeting. To continue in that tradition we ask that our Acting Chair of Prayer Mr. Dick Short, bring us of many faiths (and some of little) together to offer the blessing today. Please help us find the way today to peace and harmony in our lives.

Thought for the day: A pause for wisdom humor inspiration or creativity offered this week by ………..

     5. We are a singing club and our own Chair of Vocals, Soprano Ceta Dochterman is to be commended for her efforts at herding us cats in song.

Please be seated and enjoy your lunch.

Announcements:

“Ex Africa semper Aliquid Novi”, exclaimed the late Great Pliny the Elder, Roman Philosopher and Encyclopedias’, meaning there is always something new out of Africa.

We have quite a few new items out of Africa this week.

First, our past President and Secretary Kim Murdock reports; I think I have established the use for the $150.00 random act of kindness money the club gave to me.

Country bumpkin that I am, I have arranged to buy a cow (I think a calf is being thrown in too). My Rotarian friends here are locating the proper family to receive this gift.

The cow will provide good milk for them, I don’t expect them to eat it since a cow provides so much meat and of course there is no refrigerator, if it all works out I will deliver the cow Monday and will take good pictures to bring back to the club.

Did the gorilla trek yesterday, it was the most incredible thing I am sure I will ever do, climbed up to ten thousand feet of a rainforest volcano, this was a most wild jungle with the African men leading the way by cutting through the forest with a machete, some of the time it was an almost vertical climb with pulling your way up by using vines,

well worth it as we came upon the most magnificent creature on earth, came as close as three feet and looked eye to eye, they are the most gentle of animals and welcomed our intrusion, i have great pictures and the guide filmed it all on my camcorder, will do more wheelchairs Sunday, another gorilla trek Wednesday and a safari has been thrown in for Thursday. I’m looking forward to returning home, i miss all my animals ( oh yea, my family too :)  and all my belongings still need to be unboxed from my move. Your’s in rotary, Kim

Then of course there was that courageous Mauritanian pilot of the Boeing 737 who figured that his Hijacker spoke only Arabic, so he made a general announcement in French on the intercom. When the plane landed in Las Palmas, Canary Islands, he bounced the plane, hit the brakes, then floored the gas, throwing the hijacker (who was brandishing two pistols) to the floor. The passengers in the front rows (who were ready) overwhelmed him. He was arrested by Spanish police.
