"Let's Go Fishing" was outstanding again this year as we gathered at Lake Chabot in Castro Valley for a program enabling young people who are physically or mentally challenged to participate in a morning of fishing and boating fun! "Let's Go Fishing" is hosted by Rotary Clubs from Castro Valley, Hayward, San Leandro and San Lorenzo, with valuable support from other service clubs AND the Alameda County Fire Department, California Highway Patrol and Alameda County Sheriff’s Department. Special thanks to San Leandro Rotarian Bob Tucknott for chairing this event! Providing the extra help to make this event so successful are the efforts of students from local high schools, including Chinese Christian Schools senior class, Redwood Christian Schools’ InterAct Club, member of the Redwood High School student body, and football players from San Leandro High School and Hayward High School. These volunteers receive instruction and breakfast before their fishing buddies arrive. During the morning, there are fishing instructions, fishing games, rides on the lake, face painting, clowns, fire and law enforcement vehicles to inspect. But the BIG EVENT is when each participant catches a fish in Lake Chabot! The fish are weighed, measured, gutted, and bagged, and then are given to the participants to take home for dinner! The event concludes with a hotdog lunch, finishing up with the awards ceremony where both girls and boys are presented with awards for the longest fish and heaviest fish! It is very, very difficult to tell from viewing the pictures just who benefits or gets the most out of this wonderful activity!
